About Davido

Nigerian vocalist/producer Davido was born David Adedeji Adeleke in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1992. His interest in music began while attending Oakwood University in his late teens, and he started making his own beats and investigating music production. He dropped out of school and began pursuing music full-time, relocating to Lagos, Nigeria, and releasing his debut single, “Back When,” in 2011. The single received some attention for its mix of clubby production, high-energy vocals, and Afro-pop rhythms, and was followed shortly by second single “Dami Duro.” Work began on his debut album, Omo Baba Olowo, which was released in 2012 and produced a plethora of singles.

Success came quickly for Davido, and he sated his fans with a string of new tracks released over the next several years while work was being done on his sophomore album, The Baddest. Between 2013 and 2017, singles like “Gobe,” “Aye,” and “Pere” (among many others) piled up, sometimes featuring collaborations with bigger-name rappers like Meek Mill or Young Thug. In the time between albums, Davido also inked a deal with RCA and began his own label, although The Baddest still remained unreleased in mid-2017. The following year saw Davido issue the singles “Wonder Woman” and “NWA Baby.” In 2019, he paired with Chris Brown for the track “Blow My Mind.” ~ Fred Thomas

About Gospel

Nestled in the heart of SoHo, GOSPËL, is a cutting edge collective space, restaurant, and lounge, centered around Friendship, Music & Arts.

GOSPËL blurs boundaries with an original concept, merging a combined restaurant, bar-nightclub, art space, and home for our creative community. The multi-floor design is reflective of our BABËL ethos, allowing for content creation, self-actualization, spiritual growth, and transformative music events.

Gospel’s mantra is ‘light up the darkness,’ inspired by the legendary Bob Marley. When asked how he could perform two days after being shot, Marley responded: ‘The people who were trying to make this place worse are not taking the day off. Why should I? We say: ‘Light up the darkness.’ We are ready to share ‘The Light’ and return to a time when music was the strongest GOSPËL, a revolutionary force carried with a message of love. We’re spreading the revolution with GOSPËL and the belief that music and all creative expression is the most powerful spiritual connection to unify and inspire.

Witchdoctor's Son | Okay Temiz, Johnny Dyani

Originally released in 1976, Re-issued on Vinyl For Only 1000 Copies

One of the earliest works of Yonca Music, a unique collaboration by the legendary Turkish jazz percussionist Okay Temiz and Johnny Dyani.

A forgotten gem of the South African jazz diaspora – the 1976 Istanbul session featuring Johnny Dyani and Okay Temiz fusing deep roots and new routes, integrating folklore and rhythm within an experimental, avant-garde vision of love and life.

Recorded by Ergin Bener in 1976, Remastered by Frank Merrit at the Carvery, Witchdoctor’s Son include new liner notes by Ergin Bener, Francis Gooding and previously unpublished photographs by Hank O’Neal.

Available for the first time since Yonca Records originally released, only 1000 copies in Turkey, this album has remained an elusive and sought after landmark in South African exile Johnny Dyani’s discography.

The recording captures a complex, funky and musically together exploration of folk themes, jazz messages and popular directions. After many years together discovering both South African and Turkish sources, Temiz and Dyani were intimately versed in each other’s traditions. Side one features material arranged by Temiz, and the second has material arranged and composed by Dyani – including a stunning arrangement of Don Cherry’s Elhamdulilhah Marimba with Dyani on piano and voice.

‘The visionary Turkish percussionist and the great South African bassist were introduced by Don Cherry in 1969, when Dyani moved to Sweden after the break-up of The Blue Notes. They worked together regularly over the next decade, starting out with Cherry in the Eternal Ethnic Music trio.

“Another world,” recalls Temiz. “At that time I was trying to learn as a big band jazz drummer, and when I met Don Cherry, I said, forget it. We played another kind of music. Indian music, Turkish music, Bulgarian, Chinese, you know… All kinds of music.” “Every musician,” Dyani said later, “should realize and acknowledge that folk music is the backbone of every music.”

Recorded in Istanbul in 1976; originally released in an edition of one thousand copies only, on the Turkish label Yonca. The first side features Turkish material arranged by Temiz; the second, SA-oriented music put together by Dyani, opening with a stunning interpretation of Cherry’s Marimba (Goddess Of Music).

In a handsome gatefold sleeve, with excellent notes and previously unpublished photos.

Release Date: September 18, 2017
